Reservoir Underdogs

by Shirlock Jones

For the past few years there’s been alot of debate concerning who the "best rapper alive" is. Since the hip hop community will never be able to agree on who is the "best rapper alive", people have decided to create their own "top 5" lists of who they felt were the best suited for the "best rapper alive" title. Now look I’m not hating on people for making an opinion with their "top 5" but why does it always have to be about who is the best rapper alive? I mean it’s annoying when I’m chillin on youtube watching a throwback Black Moon video or an old Redman video and I see mad comments about the most irrelevant things that has nothing to with the video I’m watching. I mean if I’m watching a classic video like Wu Tang’s Cream or Smif Wessun’s Wreckonize I’m not trtna read comments like "Weezy’s the best ever" or how "Gucci Mane is the truth." The same goes for when I’m on here listening to a Royce Da 5’9 track and someone tries to compare their list to someone elses and the shit has nothing to do with Royce lol.

It’s boring when people post these stupid "top 5’s" with the same names as if all they know is the Biggie’s, the Jay’s, the Pac’s, the Nas’s, and etc. It’s even worse when you got people on defsounds claiming they know all about hip hop and what they consider as real hip hop but yet include the same names as everyone else. Look, I’m not mad at their lists because it’s someone’s opinion but what about all of those other emecee’s that get overlooked due to their lack of promotion and radio exposure? What about those lyrical emcee’s who consistently go in but are always overshadowed by the current trendy state of hip hop?

Well since I like to be different, let’s do something else for a change and talk about those underrated emcees of hip hop. We all focus on who is the best and forget about those who go in lyrically but never get any credit. I find it interesting to see someone mention a name that no one talks about because it shows that there is other music out there that no one is checking for. So feel free to address which emcees you think that are underrated in your "top 5" or "top 5" lists.

Mines as follows:

Phonte of Little Brother
Black Thought of The Roots
Ghostface Killah
Redman
AZ
Ice Cube
Royce Da 5’9
Andre 3000
Pharaohe Monch
Ludacris
